The "right to development" was stressed at a side event hosted by the China Human Rights Development Foundation during the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council held on March 13 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Themed "Eliminating Inequality and Promoting the Realization of the Right to Development," the side event highlighted that the right to development is an inalienable basic human right, and that equal opportunities for development are the core to its realization.

The participating experts discussed innovative approaches to ensure that all people can enjoy the right to development amid an array of global crises in economic growth, social stability and environmental protection.

Chinese representatives noted that China has promoted the realization of the right to development domestically by implementing the National Human Rights Action Plan (2021-2025), advancing poverty alleviation, improving educational equity and balancing environmental protection with development. They said that China's proposed "Global Development Initiative" has further deepened the connotation of the concept of equality in the right to development through the principle of "inclusiveness and benefit for all."
