Profiting from professional skills or hobbies, young Chinese people are no longer satisfied with their regular salary. They make handicrafts, tutor or design video games as side gigs, not only to increase their income, but also to expand their abilities beyond the workplace. Considering the high costs and few opportunities in big cities, many youngsters run businesses in smaller cities where costs are lower if they should fail. With increased use of AI, some run small companies to provide tech-centered products such as programs for athlete trackers or navigational aids. By 2021, the gig economy employed 200 million people, about one-seventh of the population. This figure is expected to double by 2036. Amid the growing trend, experts said that whatever the type of employment, dedication is a prerequisite for success.
