According to a 2025 survey by Peking University, despite young women's desire for romance, they are unlikely to enter into marriage without weighing the costs and potential risks, as women are traditionally seen to have larger roles in the family. Regardless of how independent Chinese women are, especially those between 20-24, they still factor in men's incomes, jobs and social networks before accepting a marriage proposal. Many young men, particularly those from less developed or rural areas, are hesitant to marry as well, because of the intolerable cost of bride gifts. Young people are more willing to solve their relationship problems by consulting AI. Experts suggest the country update policies to boost the confidence of young people to tie the knot.
