AI will Play as Partner, Not Substitute, in Human Job Market

China Economic Weekly June 15, 2026

By NewsChina Updated Sept.1

Despite AI's challenges to the job market, experts in China assure that instead of being formidable competitors, AI agents are ideal work partners. With AI taking mundane and entry-level jobs, human employees can develop more sophisticated skills. Truck drivers can become convoy navigators to lead automatic driving vehicles and a graphic designer can complete an entire project alone. Creativity and lifelong learning have replaced spoon-fed knowledge and professional skills as the new essential qualities for job hunters. Some professions, like scientists, strategic consultants, doctors and nurses, are irreplaceable because of their innovative nature or skills in addressing complicated scenarios. But demand for robot trainers and computing scheduler is increasing. In response to the transformation, some economists highlight the role of education, especially in rural areas, calling it a springboard to boost potential innovations.
