UNESCO announced on December 4, 2025 that it has added 72 cities from 46 countries and regions to the Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC), including three from China – Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, Shenyang, Liaoning Province and Tianjin Municipality.
Launched in 2013, the GNLC values cities that have expanded study from schools to workplaces, libraries, families and public places. They provide literacy education and skills training to all age groups to help them adapt to the changing labor market and the AI era.
According to UNESCO, Ningbo was honored for working hard to promote lifelong learning, Tianjin for supporting elderly education, community education and vocational education, as well as fostering industry-education integration, and Shenyang for expanding equitable access to preschool education, compulsory education and vocational education.
China now has 15 cities listed in the GNLC.
