A Chinese envoy to the United Nations has called for renewed global efforts to combat terrorism.
China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Sun Lei urged member countries to oppose selective counter-terrorism and double standards at a UN meeting on January 30.

Held by the UN’s Counter-Terrorism Center, the meeting discussed the Counter-Terrorism Early Warning Network for Central Asia. According to China’s Permanent Mission to the UN,
Sun said that “the Central Asia region remains generally stable, yet still deeply affected by the spillover effect of terrorist threats,” listing recent terrorist attacks in Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Sun said that China has commended Central Asian countries for their firm stance against terrorism and has been providing them with corresponding assistance and support.

He warned that the current international situation is marked by increasing turbulence and that growing challenges to socio-economic development and the resurgence and spread of terrorist threats are sounding an alarm for international peace and security.

“All countries should uphold the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, further strengthen international counter-terrorism cooperation and reject selective counter-terrorism and double standards,” he said, adding it is imperative to accelerate the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to eliminate the root causes of terrorism.
