A new revision to China’s Internet Safety Law took effect on January 1, 2026, with the safety of artificial intelligence (AI) added to the law for the first time.
The new revision states that the country supports R&D and infrastructure construction for key technologies related to AI, while authorities will strengthen the supervision and management of the safety challenges AI has brought about.
The new revision smooths its connection to relevant content in the data safety law, personal information law and Civil Law to form joint supervision of internet safety. The new law clarifies the responsibility of network operators in dealing with personal information and details the punishments for different violations.
Experts said the new revision shows authorities’ position as they strike a balance between development and risk control.
