In remarks published on January 4, 2026, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the US to release Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores at once, stop toppling the government of Venezuela and resolve issues through dialogue and negotiation.

On January 3, the US deployed military forces to seize Maduro and Flores at their home in Venezuela’s capital Caracas and took them to the US. The US accused Maduro of smuggling drugs to the US and illegally possessing destructive guns, though Maduro denied all charges in a hearing at a court in New York on January 4.

The Foreign Ministry said on its website that the US’s hegemonic acts seriously violate international law and Venezuela’s sovereignty, and threaten peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean region.

Also on January 4, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at the Seventh Round of China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue in Beijing that China never believes that any country should act as a world policeman, nor does the Chinese side agree that any country should claim to be an international judge.

“We support the Council in fulfilling its primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security, and we support all efforts by the UN secretary-general and regional countries and organizations that contribute to promoting dialogue and de-escalating the situation,” said Sun Lei, the charge d’affaires of China’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations at a UN Security Council emergency meeting on January 5.
