Like Chinese professor Wang Xiaoyun, who won a L’Oreal-UNESCO for Women in Science International Award in 2025 for her cryptography mathematics achievements, female Chinese scientists have increasingly important roles in China’s scientific endeavors. In 2024, the number of female Chinese scientific and technological personnel hit 40 million, accounting for 45.8 percent of the total. Among them are Wang Hongyang, founder of the National Center for Liver Cancer, Qi Xin, senior engineer of the China Spallation Neutron Source (a particle accelerator) and Zhou Xiao, the youngest assistant professor at the Gaoling School of Artificial Intelligence, Renmin University of China. Despite being resilient in their research fields, they are also versatile, passionate and capable of maintaining a work-life balance. Inspired by their predecessors such as Wu Chien-shiung (1912-1997) and Xie Xide (1921-2000) for their perseverance and audacity in leading scientific research in the face of gender inequality, more female scientists today defend their rights with their competence and achievements.
