Surviving the Surge in Global Downsizing

A huge wave of downsizing has swept the world with high-tech, healthcare, finance, electronic games and retail sectors all laying off substantial employee numbers. Age discrimination, which mainly targets those of 35 and above, is particularly prevalent in mammoth online platforms such as Didi Chuxing and Alibaba in China where working overtime is mandatory, which older people may find arduous. Those who prefer to job hop for better deals find it harder to get higher salaries and promotions. Many young and middle-aged Chinese are taking on second jobs. One Chinese headhunter called on people to be more extroverted so they stand out in today’s domestic job market. To be relieved from pressures or mundane jobs like those of civil servants, some choose to emigrate abroad.
