The national flag at Tiananmen Square in Beijing was lowered to half-mast on November 2 when the remains of Li Keqiang, who was a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 17th, 18th and 19th Communist Party of China (CPC) central committees and former premier of the State Council, were cremated at Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in the western suburbs of Beijing.

According to the State Xinhua News Agency, Li, 68, had a sudden heart attack on October 26 and passed away at ten minutes after midnight on October 27 in Shanghai “after all rescue measures failed.”

With a PhD in economics and an undergraduate degree in law, during his tenure, Li made great efforts to promote economic reform, often emphasizing the need to balance the relationship between the government and the market, and to build a good international business environment for higher-level opening-up. Li also cared for grass-roots people and encouraged officials to increase their understanding of the masses.

Following Li’s unexpected death, a great many people throughout China mourned the former premier, both online and offline.
