US and EU Restore Alliance to Contain China

World Affairs February 1, 2023

By NewsChina Updated Apr.1

By singling out China as the major rival and threat to their common values and interests, the US and the European Union are reshaping the Trans-Atlantic alliance to maintain their dominant roles in global politics, economy, trade, science and the military. Both the US and the EU are shifting from global multilateralism to a club-style partnership to reduce their dependence on China’s supply chains. They are restricting high-tech exports, especially semiconductors, to China. The Ukraine crisis has brought them closer on security and defense issues. However, while the EU is seeking a more equal footing in the alliance through strategic autonomy and a stronger defense capability, the US wants to maintain its leading role in the alliance by putting their security and defense cooperation within the NATO framework. The two sides also have conflicts of interest in economic and tech development.
