On April 6, the National Development and Reform Commission announced during a press conference that China will make great efforts to boost the development and application of its homegrown Beidou Navigation Satellite System during the 14th FiveYear Plan (2021-2025).

The top economic regulator said it will introduce support policies to make breakthroughs in several key areas, construct an R&D system involving cuttingedge enterprises, universities and research institutions, and spur its application in sectors such as energy and transportation, natural resources, urban construction, ecological protection and consumption. In addition, the private sector will be encouraged to get involved in innovation to produce industrial clusters with global competitiveness.

Since its service inception in July 2020, the 45 Beidou satellites in operation have constructed a relatively complete service system, established an industrial system and achieved steady growth in overseas markets. Official statistics showed that China’s output value of satellite navigation services reached 400 billion yuan (US$62.8b) by the end of 2020.
