Desire to Study Abroad Dampens

Southern Metropolis Weekly August 27, 2020

By NewsChina Updated Nov.1

Due to the continuous spread of Covid-19 around the globe, a growing number of Chinese students are wary of studying abroad. Since September 2020, many universities in the US and Europe announced the postponement of the new semester or a move to online teaching with no reduction in tuition fees. Some universities faced financial pressure due to drops in enrollment and were forced to close. As of late July, at least 33 universities in the US had closed permanently, involving nearly 5,700 Chinese students. Since August, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has released new regulations for visas for international students, further denting the enthusiasm of Chinese students to study abroad. Education experts argued that the epidemic is making many students and parents rethink their choice of studying overseas in the short term, but study abroad is likely to witness a rebound next year.
