In early August 2019, telecom giant Huawei launched its much-anticipated operating system (OS) Hongmeng OS, also known as HarmonyOS, China’s answer to Android. It is the first step in the tech giant’s ambitions to construct its own online ecosystem, particularly targeting the Internet of Things. A day later, the company unveiled the Honor smart screen TV that runs on the open-source HongmengOS at its annual developer conference. Huawei also plans to launch its premium-branded smart screen in September and partner with other companies to set up the country’s first open-source software foundation, which is expected to be activated in a month or two. Telecommunication experts argue that the foundation plan will substantially accelerate the technological innovation of Huawei and enhance China’s overall strength in the digital era.
