Meng Fansen, a 17-year-old Shandong man who shot to fame eight years ago after someone posted a photo of him expertly gutting a fish, sadly drew people’s attention once again in August when he attempted suicide by taking highly toxic pesticide. Doctors were able to save Meng’s life. According to Meng’s father, his son’s attempted suicide was triggered by a quarrel between them that escalated into a fight, while some media reports alleged that Meng’s father often beat him and refused to send him to school. Meng has reportedly helped his family sell fish since he was young. Netizens showed great sympathy for Meng, believing that he had become depressed due to his parents’ bad treatment for a long time and the latest quarrel with father was just the last.
