Promoting Green Consumption Needs Combined Efforts

As the public and enterprises are not responding well to green consumption efforts, more must be done to promote notions of environmental protection across all levels of society

While China is eyeing green consumption to cultivate awareness of sustainable development and promote a lifestyle of thrift, the results have not been remarkable. The Economic Daily came up with suggestions on how to better develop green consumption.

The main features of green consumption focus on advocating frugality, reducing waste, selecting efficient and environmentally friendly products and services, as well as reducing pollution emissions.

The most effective way would be to make the most of various channels to publicize low-carbon and environmental ideas to all different walks of life, including preschoolers. This could inspire each citizen to engage in saving resources and protecting the environment as a practitioner or a promoter.

China should also set standards for authorized green products and services to meet upgraded consumption demands. Sustainable technological innovation in terms of product design, manufacturing, storage and transportation could ease pressure on the environment and reduce pollution. There should be more use of green packaging and biodegradable materials.

A supervisory mechanism is indispensable. Enterprises form only one part of the sustainable chain, and the role of government is vital. The article suggested the government could provide incentives based on different environmental projects, with detailed regulations that make clear the  responsibilities of producers, retailers and consumers.
