On July 25, 2016, Guo Boxiong, a former Politburo member and former deputy president of the Central Military Commission of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was sentenced to life imprisonment for taking bribes. His personal assets were confiscated and he was stripped of his military rank in the latest example of the anti-corruption campaign that has promised to target both cadre “flies” and high-ranking “tigers.”
The judgment was made by the PLA’s military court, which revealed that Guo and his family used Guo’s power to interfere in many important issues and received a huge amount in bribes. The court, however, did not reveal the exact amount of the bribes paid.
Guo was detained for investigation in early April 2015. Chinese media reports revealed that Guo’s wife, He Xiulian, coordinated the bribes the family received, many involving army promotions. Thanks to Guo’s influence, his son Guo Zhenggang, now 46, was quickly promoted within the army. He was detained in February 2015, just one month after being promoted to major general.
According to Chinese media reports, by August 2015, more than 40 military tigers had fallen in President Xi Jinping’s sweeping anti-corruption campaign.
