Another high-level official has fallen in Chinese President Xi Jinping’s war on corruption. Ling Jihua, who is a former aide to President Hu Jintao, former deputy chairman of the 12th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and former director of the United Front Work Department, was found guilty of taking bribes worth about 77 million yuan (US$11.6m) and illegally obtaining State secrets. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on July 4.
The judgment was made during a closed-door trial in the city of Tianjin. Ling, 60, said that he has no intention of appealing the sentence.
Ling was detained at the end of 2014, but that was not his first time in the spotlight. In 2012, his son was killed after crashing a Ferrari. The luxury car was allegedly a gift sent by a senior official from Shanxi Province, Ling’s home region, where Ling had reportedly formed a network of powerful family members and major local players.
