Police in China, with the assistance of Thai police, arrested three suspects in the kidnapping and murder of a Chinese university student in Thailand.

The 22-year-old victim, Jin Can, who was studying music at a university in Bangkok was reported missing on March 31. Two days later, police found a body in a canal near Ton Chuek Salaya Temple. The remains were identified as Jin. An autopsy confirmed she had died three to four days previously and had been subjected to torture.

Jin’s father in China told police he was sent a picture of his daughter bound hand and foot on March 29 and was blackmailed for 500,000 yuan (US$73,529). But when he failed to pay the kidnappers’ demands on time, he lost contact with his daughter.

Thai police soon identified three Chinese men as suspects, who fled back to China on March 30. Chinese police detained them in Wuhan, Hubei Province on April 3. The Bangkok Post named the three as Chinese nationals Chen Saikang, 23, Zhou Xiongfei, 23 and Zhou Pengfei, 24, and said they will go on trial in China as Thailand has no extradition treaty with China.

Police investigations showed that the three suspects, who arrived in Thailand on March 20, plotted the kidnapping to extort money from Jin’s wealthy family. They got close to Jin by luring her into a romantic attachment with one of them.
