China Resolves to Achieve ‘Dual Carbon’ Goals

In the Report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the country’s climate goals – to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 – were reiterated as a key objective. Over the past 10 years, carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP declined by 34.4 percent, the afforestation rate reached 24.02 percent and sales of new energy vehicles ranked top across the world. The density of PM2.5 microparticle pollutants in 74 major cities fell by an average of 56 percent, and blue skies are no longer an infrequent sight in Beijing. Experts warned that despite the all-out efforts, carbon emissions reduction should not be another “Great Leap Forward” in the country.
