The general offices of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council have issued policies intended to ease the amount of homework and after-school tutoring students do, known as “double reduction.” The Ministry of Education will establish a joint law enforcement mechanism to regulate the tutoring market by working with other government agencies. After-school tutoring institutions encountered unprecedented rectifications and a number of them declared bankruptcy, even though they had received gener- ous allowances due to the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Forward Intelligence, a private consultancy, the market size of China’s educa- tion training sector rose from 1.67 trillion yuan (US$260b) in 2015 to 2.37 trillion yuan (US$370b) in 2019. The market is now expected to shrink to 1.81 trillion yuan (US$280b) in 2021. These institutions have been blamed for adding anxieties to parents and severely disturbing the public education system. The rectification of training institutions is just a start of a series of education reforms which will work to elimi- nate cutthroat competition in the education sector.
