Chinese Olympic swimming champion Sun Yang was handed down an eight-year ban for doping violations, effectively ending his career. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) sanctioned the swimmer for destroying the sample containers of an anti-doping test.

The test was conducted at Sun’s residence in September 2018, during which Sun’s team refused to allow the samples to be collected, claiming that members of the testing panel did not have licenses.

Sun’s actions were initially supported by the global swimming body FINA, who determined in 2019 that Sun had not committed an anti-doping rule violation.

The decision was overthrown by CAS, after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) filed an appeal against Sun and FINA. “It is quite another thing, after lengthy exchanges and warnings as to the consequences, to act in such a way that results in destroying the sample containers, thereby eliminating any chance of testing the sample at a later stage,” read the CAS judgment.

Sun posted on Sina Weibo that he was “very angry and shocked” at the CAS judgment and he plans to appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal.
