Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the Second India-China Informal Summit in Mamallapuram, 56 kilometers from Chennai, from October 11 to 12, during which he talked with Indian Premier Narendra Modi on strengthening the bilateral partnership.
The visit was on the invitation from Modi, who especially chose the port city of Mamallapuram because it has been significant in trade between India and China in the past, Indian media reported. The two leaders talked about their own experiences in fighting for national independence and liberation and their countries’ dreams.
Xi, according to the Xinhua News Agency, emphasized the importance of the Sino-Indian relationship as the world is undergoing enormous change, saying that bilateral cooperation is the only way for both countries to meet people’s interests and continue to develop.
Modi agreed, saying that China and India should set up a closer partnership while effectively managing and controlling disputes.
During the talks, both sides agreed to set up a high-ranking trade talk system to promote sustainable growth of the trade balance and to expand “China and India+” cooperation, a new cooperative model proposed by the two leaders during the 2018 meeting in Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province. The model aims to strengthen the two countries’ policy coordination in the region and encourage more cooperation with neighboring countries.
Following the meeting with Modi, Xi visited Nepal, where he and Nepali President Bidhya Devi Bhandari announced the establishment of a strategic friendly partnership for development and prosperity.
The Nepali politicians, Xinhua reported, said that Nepal is a close friend of China and there is no problem between the two countries, only friendship and cooperation.
During the meeting, the two sides decided to connect China’s Belt and Road construction to Nepal’s national strategy of turning itself from a “landlocked country” to a “land-connected country.” The two sides have agreed to speed up the trans-Himalayas traffic network and start a project to research the routes for a cross-border railway.
Following the two visits, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a press conference where he said that Xi’s recent visits show China’s determination to set up a shared community with neighboring countries which is of great significance to regional peace and prosperity.
