A 110-year-old woman in South China has enriched her social life and pockets through livestreaming. Living in a village in Ningxia Zhuang Autonomous Region, Shi Lanqing hardly spoke after her husband died until two years ago when her grandson showed her how to livestream with a smartphone. Ever since, the pair started a livestreaming channel on e-commerce platform Taobao as a way to sell Chinese wolfberries, which in traditional Chinese medicine are prescribed to nourish the lungs. Shi proved a hit with customers and sales skyrocketed. Her story also inspired others in the village to reach more customers through livestreaming. At the 7th Taobao Village Summit, Shi appeared in a video clip where she invited Alibaba founder Jack Ma to try Chinese wolfberries. Netizens praised livestreaming for not only expanding business opportunities in rural areas but also helping older people in China’s emptying countryside connect with the outside world.
