Public Can Participate in Public Hospital Reform: Editorial

It is hoped a new public participation commission will help hospitals avoid over-commercialization

By Zhang Qingchen Updated Nov.10

Public involvement in medical reform will empower the people, give them the rights to know and be heard, and allow them to supervise the behavior of doctors and nurses, the news portal Beijing Youth Daily editorializes.

Beijing recently launched measures to establish a modern hospital management system. They call for a public participation commission that includes deputies to the National People’s Congress, members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, professional association representatives, hospital management experts, clients and residents' representatives. It is suggested such a scheme will help the public join in and supervise the affairs of public hospitals.

The Beijing Youth Daily said the participants represent the interests of different groups, and they will act not only as supervisors but also as advisors. Others are experts in economics, finance and law, and they can provide non-medical ideas in a bid to improve public hospitals’ management abilities and professionalism.

It is hoped they will help hospitals to avoid over-commercialization.
