The local government of Yichun, Jiangxi Province has come under fire after its human resources and social insurance bureau publicized what they said was a senior’s suggestion that appealed for senior residents to give up their pensions to help ease the State’s financial pressure under an aging population. The suggestion caused fierce protest from netizens, with many criticizing the senior for licking the government’s boots and trampling on the law. According to China’s social insurance law, those who have paid into the social insurance fund can receive a pension after they retire. The local government later publicly responded that it would never adopt a suggestion that violated the law, while many netizens suspected the government had intended to feel out attitudes by releasing such an absurd “suggestion.”
