On June 12, the world witnessed a great moment as the first-ever summit between a sitting American president and a North Korean leader was finally held in Singapore, after decades of hostility.

The joint statement signed by both leaders described the historic meeting as an “epochal event of great significance in overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities” between the countries. However, in contrast to the dramatic ups and downs in the diplomacy between the US and North Korea in the last few months, many criticized the outcome of the summit for being vague with no substantive results.

We will not know if denuclearization will be the final outcome of the summit for some time, possibly years, yet the world still expects both sides to establish mutual trust through follow-up talks – paving the way for peace on the Korean Peninsula.
