The Beijing traffic management bureau recently announced a ban on electric bicycles and motorcycles on 10 major thoroughfares, effective as of April 11. Some other cities, including Shenzhen and Guangzhou, implemented similar restrictions or bans at the same time, sparking debate online. Supporters of the bans believe they will help to reduce the high rate of traffic accidents caused by these two vehicles, many of which are driven illegally. Opponents argued that the ban wrongfully punishes law-abiding commuters and criticized the government for its simplistic approach to urban management.
