The Beijing Children’s Hospital was upgraded to become the National Children’s Medical Center on June 1, while the National Children’s Medical Center (Shanghai) – a merger of the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University and Shanghai Children’s Medical Center – was established in Shanghai the same day.

The newly found medical institutes will be diagnosis and treatment centers for difficult-to-treat, rare and critical pediatric diseases, as well as serving as centers for training pediatricians. They will assume the work of registering certain diseases contracted by children nationwide, conduct epidemiology and public health monitoring, and play a major role in putting pediatric clinical research into practice.

Together with the regional children’s medical centers, they will improve the overall level of pediatric care in China, and reduce the regional gaps in medical technologies.
