Music festivals were introduced to China more than a decade ago and have become popular in many cities – although events in Beijing and Shanghai are often shut down by the police over security concerns. According to Daolue Consulting, over 200 music festivals were staged nationwide in 2016, an increase of nearly 60 percent year on year and attracting an audience of 1 million people. In May 2017 alone, 31 music festivals were held in China. But official statistics showed that roughly 80 percent of the festivals are in the red. Insiders argued that entertainment companies and the authorities could work together to boost connected industries, including tourism and catering, through the festivals, mirroring similar enterprises abroad such as Glastonbury in the UK and Burning Man in the US. In addition to ticket sales and commercial sponsorship, live broadcasts could also be powerful sources of revenue.
