After 2014 when a massive crackdown on prostitution was launched in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, the once thriving underground sex industry in the city was rooted out, forcing many “entertainment” venues and hotels to close overnight. After that, many local people adopted a wait-and-see attitude, expecting the campaign to soon be over. Three years later, however, government controls on illicit prostitution remains tight and surveillance cameras are installed in every hotel in the city. Many hotels which used to depend on the sex industry have become nursing homes for the elderly, office buildings and business incubators. Dongguan accumulated huge wealth thanks to the traditional manufacturing industry and chaotic hotel industry over the past 10 years, so it was high time for the city to make the change.
