Sites offering fake partners to take home at Spring Festival are one way young Chinese are trying to ease the parental pressure to marry. Rental fees for a partner can be over 1,500 yuan (US$218.8), with a 10 percent fee going to the site. Some netizens supported the idea of renting a partner, saying it could soften or dispel parents’ dissatisfaction, but others said it was a shortsighted and dishonest approach. Lawyers said such sites are equivalent to P2P network platforms and are legal, but they warned the act might pose risks if both parties do not comply with the law and rental agreements such as leaking information or deferring payment.
