Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CSIA) recently triggered fierce public protest over the suspected harm to humans of the airport using an X-ray scanner on passengers that is usually used to check luggage. Although the airport claimed that the radiation from the instrument is harmless in tiny amounts, netizens criticized it for trying to conceal information from the public by putting the warnings in inconspicuous areas and using the term “ultra-weak photon” instead of the familiar term “X-ray.” China’s Ministry of Environment Protection has now ordered the airport to stop using the instrument.
